Cutaneous Innervation of the Upper Limb
Structure of the Skin
The skin's structure can be seen below, along with a brief description of structures

Layers
-
Epidermis: "keratinized epithelium"
tough superficial layer and a pigmented basal layer. Provides protection.
-
Dermis: layer of elastic fibres and
collagen. Fibres give skin strength and provide skin tone.
-
Subcutaneous tissue (superficial
fascia): composed mostly of stored fat and loose connective tissue. Contains cutaneous nerves, sweat galnds, superficial blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Involved in thermoregulation and protects the skin from bone.
-
Skin ligament: small fibrous bands
present through subcutaneous tissue. Attaches to deep fascia. Determines skin mobility.
-
Deep fascia: dense connective layer.
Extensions from this layer invest in deeper structures such as skeletal muscle.
